CVE-2022-0691Network attack vector

Cross-context XSS via control-character URL parsing

Published Feb 21, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Authorization bypass in Unshift.io url-parse before 1.5.9 allows remote attackers to influence security decisions via crafted URLs. The parser leaves leading control characters in input, misclassifying absolute schemes and hostnames compared with WHATWG parsing; consumers that trust those fields can bypass URL checks and enable script execution such as javascript: XSS. Exploitation requires an application to use url-parse results for authorization or scheme filtering, with impact limited to the security decisions and rendering performed by that consumer.
