CVE-2022-0685Public exploit

Editor crash via multibyte path classification

Published Feb 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Out-of-range pointer offset in Vim before 8.2.4418 allows local users to crash the editor with a crafted multibyte path. In unix_expandpath, the wildignorecase path-expansion branch passes an arbitrary PTR2CHAR result to the C library isalpha function instead of Vim's range-safe character classifier. Triggering the fault requires Vim to process the special multibyte path while wildignorecase is enabled, and the established consequence is an editor crash.
