Remote code execution via exposed Lua package interface

Published Feb 18, 2022 · Updated Oct 21, 2025

Lua sandbox escape in Debian and Ubuntu Redis packages allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code through crafted Lua scripts. Dynamically linked Lua leaves the package interface populated, letting Redis EVAL load liblua and recover os.execute despite the sandbox. Reachability requires access to the network service and Lua scripting; successful exploitation runs shell commands with the Redis service account.
