Editor crash via unchecked empty recording buffer
Published Jan 28, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in Vim before 8.2.4233 allows local users to crash the editor by recording input while using Select mode. Vim's delete_buff_tail function passes an unchecked null current-buffer string to STRLEN when recording stops with nothing left to delete. Exploitation requires user interaction with attacker-controlled content and the Select-mode recording sequence; the demonstrated consequence is termination of the Vim process.
