Process-memory disclosure via stale Visual selection
Published Jan 21, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in Vim before 8.2 allows local users to expose process memory by exchanging windows while Visual mode is active. In win_exchange(), entering a window backed by another buffer leaves the active Visual selection tied to the prior buffer, so ml_get reads beyond the new buffer. Exploitation requires user interaction with the crafted window-exchange sequence, and the reported consequence is limited to disclosure from the Vim process.
