Unauthenticated service hang via recursive entity expansion
Published Aug 26, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Denial of service in Prosody before 0.11.12 allows remote attackers to hang the XMPP server through its WebSocket endpoint. The WebSocket module passes pre-authentication XML frames to util/xml.lua, whose libexpat parser permits recursive DTD entity expansion and does not yield while processing a complete frame. WebSockets must be enabled and exposed to an untrusted party; normal XMPP and BOSH connections are unaffected, and XXE injection depends on the linked libexpat version.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
