CVE-2022-0213Public exploit

Local code execution via unchecked NameBuff append

Published Jan 14, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Heap-based buffer overflow in Vim before 8.2 allows local users to corrupt memory by opening a crafted file in the editor. The win_redr_status function in src/drawscreen.c appends a status-space byte to NameBuff without ensuring the filename-filled buffer has room. A local user must cause Vim to process an overlong filename and redraw its status line; the overwrite can crash Vim or execute code.
