CVE-2022-0022

Password cracking via low-cost stored password hashes

Published Mar 9, 2022 · Updated Sep 16, 2024

Weak password hashing in affected Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS releases allows attackers to crack local account passwords. In normal non-FIPS-CC mode, PAN-OS creates administrator and local-user password hashes with insufficient computational effort, making recovered hashes susceptible to offline guessing. Exploitation requires privileged access to obtain the hashes from the PAN-OS configuration; it exposes account passwords but does not directly alter data or interrupt service.
