Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Jan 16, 2026 · Updated Jan 16, 2026
Privilege escalation in Acer Updater Service 1.2.3500.0 allows local users to execute code as LocalSystem during service startup. The auto-start Live Updater Service registers C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Updater\UpdaterService.exe without quotation marks, so Windows can resolve an attacker-planted executable from an earlier path segment. A local account must place the executable in a searched parent path and then wait for application startup or reboot.
