Local service interruption via unreleased NFS ACL references
Published May 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Memory leak in the Linux NFSv3 client from 3.14 allows local users to exhaust kernel memory through failed create or mknod operations. The nfs3_proc_create() and nfs3_proc_mknod() error paths retain acl and default_acl references returned by posix_acl_create() instead of releasing them. Triggering the leak requires local access to perform creation operations on a mounted NFSv3 filesystem with POSIX ACL handling; repetition can deplete kernel memory and interrupt service.
