Local system panic via nested pseudo-NMI
Published Feb 27, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in the Linux GICv3 interrupt handler allows local users to panic ARM64 systems via nested pseudo-NMIs. The handler re-enables interrupts after treating a spurious interrupt as an NMI, allowing a higher-priority interrupt to enter nmi_enter() again and trigger BUG_ON(in_nmi()). Reachability requires an ARM64 GICv3 kernel with pseudo-NMI support enabled; successful triggering causes a fatal kernel panic and service interruption.
