Account discovery via distinguishable login errors
Published Mar 28, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Username enumeration in EMQ X Dashboard 3.0.0 allows remote attackers to identify valid accounts through the login API. The /api/v3/auth handler returns “Password Error” for an existing username with a wrong password but “Username Not Found” for an unknown username. Network access to the Dashboard login endpoint is sufficient; the disclosed account validity can support credential attacks but does not itself expose passwords or grant access.
