Unauthenticated code execution via FreeMarker email rendering
Published Feb 11, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Server-side template injection in Magnolia CMS 6.2.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code through public forms. The registration and forgotten-password email flows render the fullname value as FreeMarker content; a crafted expression reconstructs the Execute class name from the stored username and invokes commands. No authentication is required, but the Public User Registration module and either exposed form must be present, after which commands run with the CMS process's privileges.
