Application crash via unowned hostname memory free
Published Jan 6, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Use-after-free in uriparser before 0.9.6 allows context-dependent attackers to crash applications through a crafted URI. For IPv4 or IPv6 hostnames, uriMakeOwnerEngine leaves hostText pointing to non-owned input instead of duplicating it, so uriFreeUriMembers later frees memory it does not own. Exploitation requires a consuming application to parse attacker-controlled URI data and exercise the affected ownership or normalization path; the grounded consequence is a process crash.
