Cross-site scripting via unvalidated formatter URL scheme
Published Dec 24, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Wikibase for MediaWiki through 1.37 allows remote attackers to execute JavaScript through a formatter URL. The external-identifier formatter substitutes $1 into a stored URL without validating its scheme, leaving javascript URLs clickable. A victim must click the generated link; the script then runs in the wiki origin and can read or alter data available to that browser session.
