Local privilege escalation via overpowered service methods
Published Dec 27, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Avast Antivirus before 20.4 allows local users to gain elevated privileges through the main antivirus service. The service exposes unnecessarily powerful internal methods to low-privileged callers, enabling arbitrary file deletion, file writing, and security resets. Local code execution is required, and successful exploitation can alter protected files or reset antivirus security settings.
