SYSTEM privilege escalation via unrestricted driver IOCTLs
Published Feb 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Micro-Star International MSI Center 1.0.31.0 and earlier allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges. The atidgllk, atillk64, MODAPI, NTIOLib, and WinRing0 driver families accept IOCTLs that expose physical-memory mapping, model-specific register access, and I/O-port reads and writes to low-privileged callers. A local low-privileged user can use these primitives to alter protected kernel state and execute with NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM privileges.
