Administrator escalation via writable VPN executable
Published Dec 30, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in RiseupVPN 0.21.6 allows local users to gain Administrator privileges via a non-default Windows installation with weak executable ACLs. The installer leaves the VPN executable replaceable when installed outside the system root, allowing a lower-privileged user to substitute a malicious binary. An Administrator must later launch that binary, after which the attacker obtains administrator-level execution.
