Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Apr 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unquoted service path handling in Ext2Fsd 0.68 allows local users to execute code as LocalSystem during service startup or reboot. The Ext2Srv service registers C:\Program Files\Ext2Fsd\Ext2Srv.exe without quotation marks, causing Windows to search ambiguous executable locations. Exploitation requires local access to place a crafted executable in a searched location and a service start or system reboot; success grants LocalSystem privileges.
