Local privilege escalation via unquoted service paths
Published Apr 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unquoted service paths in Vembu BDR 4.2.0.1 U1 allow local users to execute code as LocalSystem during service startup or reboot. The hsflowd, VembuBDR360Agent, and VembuOffice365Agent ImagePath values omit quotes around executable paths under C:\Program Files, causing Windows to resolve an attacker-placed executable before the intended binary. A local low-privileged user must write a crafted executable to a searched parent directory and wait for a service start or system reboot, after which the payload runs as LocalSystem.
