Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Apr 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unquoted service path in bVPN 2.5.1 allows local users to execute code as LocalSystem through the waselvpnserv service. The waselvpnserv ImagePath is an unquoted C:\Program Files (x86)\bVPN Service\bVPN\waselvpnserv.exe string, so Windows can select an attacker-planted executable from an earlier space-delimited path component. A local user must be able to place that file; it runs with LocalSystem privileges when the automatic service starts, including after a reboot.
