Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Apr 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unquoted service path handling in FreeLAN 2.2 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as LocalSystem on Windows systems. The FreeLAN Service registers its executable path without quotation marks, causing Windows to test space-delimited path prefixes and launch a crafted file placed at a writable candidate path. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and write permission to such a path; code runs when the automatic service starts or the host reboots.
