Process crash via unchecked ELF hash-table access
Published Mar 24, 2023 · Updated Feb 25, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in UPX before 4.0.0-git-c6b9e3c62d15 allows remote attackers to crash the process via crafted ELF data. PackLinuxElf32::elf_lookup() derives a hash-table index from untrusted ELF metadata and passes an out-of-range pointer to get_le32() without validating the referenced range. Processing the crafted ELF is required; the observed segmentation fault terminates UPX, with no reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
