Process crash via out-of-bounds bucket read
Published Mar 24, 2023 · Updated Feb 25, 2025
A heap-based buffer overflow in UPX before 4.0.0-git-c6b9e3c62d15 allows attackers to crash UPX via a crafted ELF file. During decompression, PackLinuxElf32::invert_pt_dynamic trusts the GNU hash bucket count and indexes buckets[j] beyond its allocated heap region. Processing the file in unpack mode is required; the demonstrated result is a segmentation fault and availability loss, not code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
