Service crash via unchecked ELF symbol lookup
Published Mar 24, 2023 · Updated Feb 25, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in The UPX Team UPX before 4.0.0-git-c6b9e3c62d15 allows attackers to crash UPX via a crafted ELF file. PackLinuxElf32::elf_lookup passes unchecked hash-table-derived pointers to get_le32, which performs a four-byte read beyond the allocated heap buffer. Exploitation requires UPX to process attacker-controlled ELF input; the demonstrated consequence is an abort or segmentation fault, not code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
