Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Nov 12, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unquoted service path handling in NI Service Locator before 18.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code and escalate privileges. The NiSvcLoc Windows service stores its fully qualified executable ImagePath without quotes, so Windows can launch attacker-planted code from an earlier space-delimited path element. Exploitation requires authorized local access and yields privilege escalation when the service starts the planted executable.
