Application crash via unchecked XML root
Published Aug 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
NULL pointer dereference in Kitware VTK before 9.2.5 allows remote attackers to crash applications via a malformed XML tree. In vtkXMLTreeReader::RequestData, xmlDocGetRootElement can return null, but the result is passed to vtkXMLTreeReaderProcessElement without a null check. The embedding application must parse attacker-controlled XML with vtkXMLTreeReader; exploitation terminates that process without reading or changing data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
