Applet crash via freed variable access
Published Nov 15, 2021 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Use-after-free in BusyBox awk 1.26 through 1.33.1 allows attackers to crash the applet via a crafted awk pattern. The getvar_s function accesses variable storage after its lifetime has ended while evaluating the pattern. Exploitation requires attacker-controlled input to the non-daemon applet; a crash ordinarily interrupts its forked process, and code execution remains undemonstrated.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
