Local root execution via spoofed software update
Published Mar 11, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper update authentication in Luna Simo PPR1.180610.011/202001031830 allows local users to execute code with root privileges. The /system/bin/osi_bin binary accepts an update encrypted with a hard-coded AES key without authenticating its origin, then executes its shell script and optional ARM binary. Exploitation requires a third-party app with external-storage write access; the payload runs in the osi SELinux domain and can persist across reboots.
