CVE-2021-41500Network attack vector

Application denial of service via truncated Capsule-name comparison

Published Dec 17, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Incorrect comparison in cvxopt 1.2.6 and earlier allows attackers to interrupt applications by passing forged Capsules to CHOLMOD APIs. The diag, getfactor, solve, and spsolve bindings compare only the first 14 bytes of a Capsule name with CHOLMOD FACTOR, so names containing malicious suffixes pass validation. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled Python object to reach one of these APIs; the reported consequence is denial of service, with no reported data disclosure or modification.
