Service interruption via backtracking email validation
Published Jun 27, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in regexfn 1.0.5 allows attackers to interrupt Node.js applications via crafted invalid email input. The isEmail validator processes a long run of digits followed by an invalid character with a regular expression that performs excessive backtracking. Exploitation requires a consuming application to pass untrusted email values to isEmail and can monopolize the JavaScript execution thread without reading or modifying data.
