Service interruption via email-validation regex backtracking
Published Jun 27, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in that-value 0.1.3 allows remote attackers to interrupt application service with a crafted invalid email. The is.email() validation path applies a vulnerable regular expression to repeated dot-and-exclamation-mark sequences, causing excessive matching work. Applications that pass untrusted email input to this validator expose processing capacity without requiring authentication or user interaction.
