Service interruption via unbounded script sanitization regex
Published Jun 14, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in Delight Nashorn Sandbox before 0.3.1 allows remote attackers to interrupt service. The JsSanitizer.injectInterruptionCalls method applies POISON_PILLS patterns directly to attacker-controlled script text without bounding matcher character accesses, enabling pathological backtracking and CPU exhaustion. Exploitation requires an application to pass untrusted JavaScript into the library; the resulting regular-expression work can hang the processing thread and interrupt service.
