CVE-2021-40449Known exploitationPublic exploit

SYSTEM privilege escalation via reentrant ResetDC callback

Published Oct 13, 2021 · Updated Oct 21, 2025

Use-after-free in Microsoft Windows Win32k allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through a crafted ResetDC callback. GreResetDCInternal retains PDC and PDEV references across an hdcOpenDCW user-mode callback, where a nested ResetDC call frees the original device context before those references are reused. Code must already run at medium integrity; successful exploitation enables controlled kernel memory access and execution as SYSTEM.
