NT SYSTEM escalation via writable service binaries
Published Jan 28, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Incorrect default permissions in Advantech DeviceOn/iEdge Server 1.0.2 allow local users to gain NT SYSTEM privileges. The default C:\Program Files\Advantech installation grants Everyone Full Control over binaries and libraries loaded by the PostgreSQL service. Low-privileged local access is sufficient to replace a service-loaded file, causing PostgreSQL to run attacker-controlled code as NT SYSTEM.
