Arbitrary file write via unvalidated archive paths
Published Aug 27, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Path traversal in Squashfs-Tools 4.5 allows context-dependent attackers to write files outside the destination via a crafted image. squashfs_opendir in unsquash-1.c copies an archive-supplied directory-entry name without rejecting slashes or dot segments before unsquashfs uses it as an output path. Exploitation requires processing the image, and writes inherit the unsquashfs process permissions; code execution requires a writable file that another component later executes.
