SYSTEM privilege escalation via writable DLL search path
Published Dec 14, 2021 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Rapid7 Insight Agent 3.0.1 through 3.1.2.34 allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM. At startup, its Python interpreter searches C:\DLLs for python3.dll and loads the library from that normally user-writable directory without constraining the search path. A locally authenticated user who can place a malicious DLL at that location gains SYSTEM execution when the agent starts.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
