Local privilege escalation via pending NFC read
Published Mar 30, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Use-after-free memory corruption in Google Cloud Android 12L NFC allows local users to escalate privileges without user interaction. The phNxpNciHal_fw_download error path retries a failed NFC firmware download while a transport-layer read remains pending, leaving released state reachable by the callback. User-level code execution is required, and successful exploitation elevates privileges locally rather than through a network interface.
