Local privilege escalation via repeated object release
Published Jan 14, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Use-after-free in the System component of Android 11 and Android 12 allows local users to elevate privileges via Binder parcel data. Parcel::ipcSetDataReference releases unowned objects again on an error path after their storage has been freed, corrupting memory. A low-privileged local process can trigger the flaw without user interaction and gain higher permissions; network-only access cannot reach it.
