Code execution via recursive metadata traversal
Published Sep 20, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Stack exhaustion in SWFTools through 20200710 allows local users to execute code when swfdump processes a crafted SWF file. While dumping ActionScript metadata, dump_method and traits_dump recursively invoke each other without a depth or cycle check until the process stack is exhausted. The public reproducer requires a user to run swfdump on the file and demonstrates a segmentation fault; the CVE record asserts code execution without demonstrating it.
