Privileged code execution via invalid compression metadata
Published Sep 7, 2021 · Updated Dec 2, 2025
Out-of-bounds access in NTFS-3G before 2021.8.22 allows local users or physically proximate attackers to execute privileged code. The ntfs_decompress function fails to validate compressed NTFS metadata before using it to access a decompression buffer, producing an out-of-bounds access. Exploitation requires local access to a setuid-root ntfs-3g binary or physical access to storage on a system configured to invoke NTFS-3G when media is attached.
