CVE-2021-39256

Privileged code execution via malformed NTFS metadata

Published Sep 7, 2021 · Updated Dec 2, 2025

Heap-based buffer overflow in NTFS-3G before 2021.8.22 allows local users to execute privileged code via a crafted NTFS image. The ntfs_inode_lookup_by_name function insufficiently validates NTFS metadata before writing into a heap buffer. Exploitation requires local access with ntfs-3g setuid root, or physical media processed automatically by an affected tool.
