Arbitrary file overwrite via case-colliding dependencies
Published Aug 31, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Symlink following in @npmcli/arborist before 2.8.2 allows attackers to overwrite arbitrary files through a crafted package tree. Its children map treats dependency names that differ only by case as distinct, then extracts a colliding archive through a file symlink. Exploitation requires installation of untrusted packages on a case-insensitive filesystem such as macOS or Windows and can remove existing target contents.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
