Authenticated code execution via unrestricted update upload
Published Aug 12, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Unrestricted file upload in Sitecore 10.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute code through Update Center. The custom-update upload accepts an ASPX file despite extension restrictions and stores it under /sitecore/admin/Packages/, where requesting the file causes IIS to execute it. A valid Sitecore account and enabled Update Center are required; successful exploitation runs attacker-supplied server code.
