Service interruption via attacker-controlled regular expression evaluation
Published Dec 16, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in cBioPortal 3.6.21 and earlier allows remote attackers to interrupt service via a crafted POST request. The ProteinArraySignificanceTestJSON servlet reads the alteration parameter and concatenates it directly into four String.matches patterns, permitting catastrophic backtracking. No authentication or user interaction is required; repeated expensive matches consume server resources and interrupt portal availability.
