Privilege escalation via unchecked session authorization reset
Published Aug 10, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege management in PostgreSQL set_user before 2.0.1 allows attackers to regain the session user's database privileges. The ProcessUtility hook blocks RESET ROLE but fails to recognize the session_authorization reset, allowing RESET SESSION AUTHORIZATION to escape managed role-state enforcement. Reachability requires a session that invoked set_user() to assume a less privileged role; the command restores the original, potentially superuser, session identity outside reset_user() controls.
