User-triggered arbitrary code execution
Published Aug 12, 2021 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
Remote code execution in Microsoft Windows Media MPEG-4 Video Decoder allows context-dependent attackers to run code via crafted media. Microsoft has not published the defective decoder routine or the incorrect operation it performs while parsing the untrusted stream. Exploitation requires user interaction with attacker-controlled media and grants code execution in the affected user's security context.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

CVSS describes severity. EPSS estimates exploitation probability.
Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
