Remote service crash via unchecked screenshot allocation
Published Aug 9, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Denial of service in HelpSystems Cobalt Strike Team Server 4.2 and 4.3 allows remote attackers to crash the service via fake Beacons. The screenshot-reply parser trusts a four-byte size field without a sanity check and allocates an attacker-controlled buffer. A retrieved Beacon configuration and public key enable unauthenticated registration, after which repeated oversized replies exhaust memory and halt Beacon communications until restart.
