Unauthenticated API access via blank system account
Published Feb 6, 2023 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Authentication bypass in Western Digital PR4100 firmware 2.40.157 and earlier allows remote attackers to access the REST API. Firmware provisions the nobody system account with an empty password, and API authentication accepts the credentials for USER_AUTH endpoints. Default LAN exposure permits low-privilege API actions; full root code execution requires chaining separate firmware-update flaws.
