CVE-2021-3596Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Process crash via unchecked SVG parser pointer

Published Feb 24, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

NULL pointer dereference in ImageMagick before 7.0.10-31 allows remote attackers to crash image-processing processes via crafted SVG input. ReadSVGImage in coders/svg.c passes the unchecked result of libxml2's xmlCreatePushParserCtxt to XML parsing routines, which dereference it when parser creation fails. Reachability requires an application to process attacker-controlled SVG data and parser allocation to fail; the demonstrated low-privilege trigger exhausts temporary storage, causing a process-level segmentation fault.
